Cobras Within Striking Distance
02 Mar 2009 by Amy
Harford Tech hosted the 2009 1A/2A East Regional Wrestling Tournament. Many were on hand to see the great competition between the UCBAC and Bayside conferences. It was a tightly contested battle between Harford Tech, Rising Sun, North Caroline and Easton.
As the Regional finals were nearing, the Cobras knew they needed a few pins to secure the win over the competition. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. The Cobras fell a bit short placing second behind Rising Sun, crowning two champions.
We would like to congratulate all of our top four placewinners who will travel to College Park for the prestigious Maryland State Wrestling Tournament this weekend. Harford Tech will be well represented by these seven athletes:
112 Brandon Gain, 1st Place (3x Region Champ, 3x UCBAC Champ, 3rd States) 125 Mark Massimini, 3rd Place 135 John Walther, 4th Place 140 Tyler Hiob, 2nd Place (UCBAC Champ) 152 Cory Wood, 2nd Place (UCBAC Champ) 160 Patrick Rivera, 3rd Place 189 Lance Lepard, 1st Place (Region Champ, UCBAC Champ, 5th States)
Also, congrats to our lone alternate, Joey Malanga, (130) who wrestled only half of a year on varsity and made some noise at the end of the season. We look for more good things from you next year!

The very next day, the Cobras challenged both Caravel Academy and John Carroll. The team finished on top of Caravel, but lost a squeaker to JC. In a tight match, it came down to the pins. Harford Tech split seven matches, but lost by six points.

The second night, the Cobras fought on not losing to a single team for a final record of 7-1. That was good enough to earn them a runner-up finish outscoring all of their opponents 440-149.

All of the wrestlers did a great job and there were a few nice performances put in by Joe Malanga, AJ Tutino, Chase George and Joey Contrino. We expect big things in the future from these guys.
